What AI Can’t Replace: The Human Competencies That Actually Win Deals

An infographic about the blog topic.

In our recent Sales 3.0 Master Class, Tim Riesterer from Corporate Visions turned conventional thinking upside down. Instead of asking “Where can we apply AI?” he asked the more strategic question: “What can’t AI replace?”

The answer changes everything about how we should train and develop salespeople.

The Poker Analogy That Explains Modern Sales

Tim shared a fascinating insight from poker research: only 12% of the time does the best hand win. The other 88%? That’s skill, strategy, and the human story the player tells through their betting, bluffing, and presence.

Sales works the same way. Your product features are the cards you’re dealt. But winning requires distinctly human competencies that AI simply cannot replicate.

What Buyers Actually Say Matters

Here’s where Corporate Visions’ research gets revolutionary. They analyzed 150,000 B2B decisions—actual win-loss data from buyers, not sellers’ self-reports. The disconnect is staggering: when you ask buyers and sellers about win-loss reasons from the same deal, their answers differ 70% of the time.

Corporate Visions’ analysis revealed eight predictive buying experiences (they call this The Great 8 Sales Competency Framework) that determine wins versus losses, ranked from 91% to 73% predictive power:

  • Align Solutions to Needs
  • Make a Case for Change
  • Demonstrate Clear Differentiation
  • Articulate Meaningful Value
  • Help Justify Decisions
  • Negotiate Creatively
  • Resolve Concerns Responsively
  • Deliver Compelling Communications

Interestingly, more common skills like product and industry knowledge scored around 50% in terms of predictive power—essentially a coin flip. These basics must show up differently, embedded within the experiences that buyers value.

The Most Underrated KPI

Tim revealed that, according to buyers, 53% of lost deals could have been won by the losing vendor. Not because of product limitations or pricing. Because of deficiencies in the human-delivered experience.

Think about that: more than half your losses are entirely fixable through competency development.

Beyond Spray-and-Pray Training

Corporate Visions has pioneered performance-based sales skills assessments using AI simulations. Instead of asking sellers to rate themselves, they perform skills in realistic scenarios across each of the Great 8 competencies.

The result? Precise identification of competency gaps, enabling cohort-based training where salespeople get exactly what they individually need—not blanket training everyone receives.

One company rescued their entire year this way, going from significantly behind quota to 102% attainment by focusing intensive development on their top three competency deficiencies.

The Bottom Line

AI will make sales processes more efficient. It will handle data, provide insights, and accelerate pipeline management. But AI cannot create the human experiences that actually close deals.

Your competitive advantage isn’t in the technology stack. It’s in developing the distinctly human competencies that buyers say matter most. Learn more: www.CorporateVisions.com
