The Four Styles of Selling

By Merrick Rosenberg, Author of Personality Intelligence: Master the Art of Being You
Bald Eagle flaps its wings from its nest.

Every buyer perceives the world differently. If you try to sell to everyone the same way, you’ll reach some but confuse others. Knowing the four styles—Eagle, Parrot, Dove, and Owl—helps you customize your approach so your message connects every time.

Eagles

are decisive, driven, and results-focused. They value speed, efficiency, and control. Most salespeople are taught, “Never start with price.” While that might be true for other styles, delaying too long with an Eagle can cause you to lose them. They see time as money and want to know if the conversation is worth continuing. Clearly state your value, get straight to the point, and don’t waste their time. Showing respect for their pace earns their respect for your expertise.

Parrots

bring energy and enthusiasm to every interaction. They dream big and see possibilities everywhere. Traditional sales advice says, “Find their pain.” But Parrots prefer to focus on a brighter future rather than dwelling on what’s broken. Ask them to describe what success looks like, then follow up with, “Out of what you just described, what do you not have today?” This reveals the opportunity without diminishing their optimism. Parrots buy into the dream, not the diagnosis.

Doves

are warm, loyal, and caring. They prioritize trust above all. Push them too hard, and they’ll withdraw. In Glengarry Glen Ross, Alec Baldwin’s character famously said, “Always Be Closing.” With Doves, it should be, “Always Be Connecting.” They buy from people they trust. So slow down. Ask about their team, their goals, and their concerns. Listen more than you talk. When they feel safe, they’ll open up and share what truly matters to them.

Owls

are logical, methodical, and detail-oriented. They want to understand every aspect before making a commitment. The myth about Owls is that leading with features will lose them. In reality, features are exactly what they need. Then, link those features to value. They’ll ask countless questions, not to challenge but to build confidence in their decision. Bring data, specs, and proof points. Meeting their demand for precision earns their trust.

Selling isn’t just about delivering a perfect pitch. It’s about aligning your style with theirs. The Eagle seeks results. The Parrot craves excitement. The Dove values trust. The Owl needs accuracy. When you tailor your message to match how people think, decide, and feel, you shift from simply selling to forming a connection.

The most successful salespeople don’t alter what they sell. They adjust how they sell it. Personality Intelligence turns selling from persuasion into alignment, where you meet people where they are at, speak their language, and guide them toward a decision that feels right to them.
