AI Is No Longer Optional—It’s Your New Growth Engine

An infographic about the blog topic.

For years, we’ve heard the buzz about Artificial Intelligence. We’ve seen the pilots, the chatbots, and the “science experiments.” But if you want to know where the future of your company is truly heading, you don’t ask the tech enthusiasts—you follow the money. And you ask the Board of Directors.

The results are in from the 23rd Annual “What Directors Think” Survey, conducted by Corporate Board Member and the Diligent Institute, and the signal is deafening. For the first time, AI has graduated from an operational tool to a primary pillar of corporate strategy.

According to the report, 38% of directors now identify “deploying AI technology across the business” as a top organizational priority for growth in 2026—statistically tying with traditional heavyweight strategies like launching new products or entering new markets. Furthermore, a plurality of directors (42%) expect technology adoption to be their single largest area of capital investment this year.

This is a massive shift. The board is no longer asking, “How can AI save us money?” They are asking, “How will AI drive our revenue?”

But here is the wake-up call for every CEO and Sales Leader reading this: The board is terrified that you aren’t ready.

While directors are authorizing massive capital for AI, they are simultaneously sounding the alarm on execution. Approximately one-third (32%) of directors identified a “lack of knowledge and capabilities among the leadership team” as the single biggest risk to their AI strategy.

Let that sink in. The very people approving your budget are worried that the C-Suite lacks the technical acumen to deliver on the promise of AI. They see a “knowledge gap” that threatens to turn these investments into vulnerabilities.

As sales leaders, we are the custodians of growth. If the board views AI as the engine of that growth, we cannot afford to be the passengers who don’t know how to drive. We must move from experimentation to total integration. We need to become the leaders who don’t just “use” AI, but who fundamentally restructure our sales organizations around it to deliver the “alpha” the board demands. Do not let a lack of knowledge be the reason your strategy fails.
