74% of Leaders Struggle with AI – Here’s Why the Gap Exists and How to Close It

By Jonathan Kvarfordt, VP of GTM Growth & Marketing, Momentum
Claw hammer and nails.

If you’re a revenue leader, you’re probably feeling a familiar anxiety. You read headlines about competitors “crushing it with AI.” Your board is asking pointed questions about your AI strategy. You feel a gnawing sense that while you’re testing new tools, others are playing a fundamentally different game.

This feeling is real. And it’s justified.

Our recent market research, analyzing 1,069 active B2B technology opportunities, confirms this feeling isn’t just in your head. We found that a staggering 74.4% of organizations explicitly describe themselves as “struggling” with their technology and AI implementation. The “we’re behind” syndrome is statistically valid.

But here’s the plot twist: You’re not behind your competitors. You’re all behind the promise of AI.

The 10x Reality Gap

This is what I like to call the “Great B2B Technology Reality Gap”. While McKinsey reports that 78% of enterprises have “adopted AI”, our analysis of real-world operational conversations reveals a starkly different story. We found that only 7.6% of organizations are actually leveraging AI operationally in a deep, meaningful way.

This 10x gap exists because we’re confusing access with adoption.

We are throwing tools at the problem. We hand out ChatGPT licenses or roll out Copilot and expect transformation. Yet, our research shows 51.1% of these same companies still rely on manual processes for core business functions.

We’re using powerful technology to do “faster, louder bad things.” And on top of that, we are asking the wrong question:

“How do I use AI to make my current (and often broken) processes better?”.

From Tools to Architecture

The leaders who are actually pulling ahead in that elite 7.6% are asking a fundamentally different question: “How do I architect intelligent systems that didn’t exist before?”.

This is the critical shift from buying tools to building Intelligence Architecture, a new operating model for your entire revenue organization. Intelligence Architecture works differently:

  • It’s an amplifier, not a replacement: It stops treating AI as a tool to replace humans and starts using it as a system to amplify them.
  • It’s a system, not a task: It stops focusing on automating isolated tasks (like writing one email) and instead designs how intelligence (both human and artificial) flows across your entire organization.
  • It frees your team: It automatically captures, synthesizes, and routes insights from every customer call, email, and meeting. This creates a single, reliable source of truth, freeing your team from more than half of manual work holding them back.

When your architecture is intelligent, your team can stop spending their time on data entry and focus 100% on what humans do best: building relationships, thinking strategically, and solving complex customer problems.

This AI anxiety is just a side effect of trying to put rocket fuel in a lawnmower. Your old processes were never built for this. So stop buying more tools and start building a new blueprint, because this new model requires a new kind of leader: an Intelligence Architect.
