Airline Seating Made Simple

By Renee Houston Zemanski

You’ve got a small budget (what’s new?), but you need to fly in some VIPs to your next meeting. While you can book first class for some, it just won’t work for all. How can you choose the best seat for the money? Easy. Go to Seatguru.com – a Website that claims to be the ultimate source for airplane seating, in-flight amenities, and airline information.

The Seatguru features some pretty cool things as far as seating arrangements, providing detailed seat map graphics for every airline and its planes. For example, if you click on an airline, it will list the type of plane (e.g., Boeing 737, Airbus A-300). Once you click on the plane type, it will provide you with a color-coded diagram to help you easily identify superior and substandard seats. For instance, the color green denotes a good seat, a green and yellow seat represents a mixed review on the seat, and red indicates a poor seat – there are more color codes in addition to the ones mentioned.

Seatguru also gives you in-depth seat specific comments, noting seats that have limited recline, reduced legroom, and misaligned windows as well as in-seat power port locations. The diagram also displays where crew seats, lavatories, galleys, closets, and emergency exits are located.

For specific comments about seats on each aircraft, the user simply has to move his or her mouse over the plane illustration. It will give detailed comments such as, "Seat 10-C has limited recline and does not have any extra legroom despite being in an exit row. As this is the only twosome on the plane, it can be ideal when traveling with a partner. It can get very cold by the exits during the flight."

And that’s not all – on every plane page, there is an In-Flight Amenity box. The amenity icons pictured in the box represent the services that are available on a particular aircraft. Click on the individual icons for more details and links to additional information. If an icon is not pictured, that service is not offered on the aircraft.

When you select an airline from the left-hand menu, you’ll be taken to that airline’s General Information page, which provides quick links and contact information. From the General Information page, you can navigate the airline’s information pages for tips on check-in, baggage, unaccompanied minors, and traveling with infants and pets.
