DESTINATION: Scottsdale, Arizona

By Renee Houston Zemanski

The "West’s Most Western Town" has more than 300 days of sunshine each year and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in America, but those are just two of the reasons you should plan your next meeting there.

Getting There: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (skyharborairport.com) is served by 19 airlines with nonstop service to more than 100 U.S. cities. Tucson International Airport (tucsonairport.org) is served by 11 airlines with nonstop services to 17 cities and connections to more than 121 destinations.

Meeting Places/Places to Stay: The AAA Four Diamond Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center, a luxury desert vacation retreat with exceptional meeting space, features advanced technology, 50,000 square feet of meeting space, and award-winning service. The InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley features 253 guest rooms, 40 suites, 34 single-family villas, six restaurants, a 31,000-square-foot spa and salon, five pools and more than 27,000 square feet of meeting space. The JW Marriott Resort & Spa, awarded AAA Five Diamond status for the 33rd consecutive year, just completed a $50 million renovation that featured upgrades to its 300 guest rooms and expansion of its meeting space to include a 20,000 square-foot ballroom. Xona Resorts Suites, formerly Resort Suites Scottsdale, completed a multi-million dollar renovation that include a new lobby and porte cochere, updated guest suites, the Asada Desert Grille restaurant, the Orange Iguana indoor/outdoor lounge, and renovated pool areas. NOTE: The Phoenician is adding a 42,000-square-foot conference facility and ballroom. The new $40 million structure will be completed by October 2009.

Where to Eat: The Palm Court in Scottsdale’s Conference Resort features continental cuisine prepared in Old World style and includes one of the finest Sunday brunches in the area. Or try eclectic Cowboy Ciao for modern American cuisine with global influences. Treat your taste buds to something unique when you dine at Medizona – an artful combination of Mediterranean ingredients and Southwestern recipes from Arizona. Mastro’s Steakhouse recreates the intimate, elegant, swanky ambience of steakhouses from the ’50s and ’60s and steaks that are dry-aged and seasoned to perfection. Seafood dominates the menu at Deseo – try the shrimp marinated in roasted tomato and avocado.

What to Do: Scottsdale is most noted for its championship golf courses, luxurious spas, and world-class resorts, but there’s more! You can also tour the Sonoran Desert by Jeep, ATV, Hummer, or hot-air balloon, take a sunset hike up Camelback Mountain or Pinnacle Peak, visit the Desert Botanical Garden for the largest collection of cacti in the world, or take a day trip up to Grand Canyon National Park. If you like to walk and window shop, forget the traditional mall and make your way to Old Town Scottsdale. You’ll find winding streets full of unique shops and galleries. Or simply stroll along landscaped pathways on the Arizona Canal in Scottsdale.

Don’t Miss: Frank Lloyd Wright’s magnificent desert masterpiece, Taliesin West, the renowned architect’s winter home overlooking the entire metropolitan Phoenix valley from atop 600 acres in the McDowell Mountain foothills.

Weather: Scottsdale enjoys relatively low humidity year-round, however, temperatures can reach beyond the 100-degree mark from May through September. Best weather for outdoor activities: November through April.
